According to historian Daniel J. Boorstin, the modern American
tourist expects both more strangeness and even more more familiarity
than the world naturally offers. Ireland continues to American
tourists more than its share of both.
At first look, Ireland might seem quite familiar to most
American visitors. The language is just the same, slightly
more lyrical perhaps. The faces one encounters are familiar,
the food is of course similar. A msjority of visitors, mainly
Irish Americans, find their arrival as some sort of homecoming.
It does takes a while superficial mask to wear off. And when
it does, the other face of Ireland unmasks, making the country
very exciting.
Ireland, for many is a place contradictions and complexities.
People find it both ancient and yet with an adolescent touch
to it. It is as young as it is old!
Within a few hours drive of downtown Dublin lie Bronze Age
forts, Neolithic tombs, Viking walls, early Christian monastic
sites and ancient Georgian estates -- enough to make one's
head spin. One would find centuries-old castles are very common
in Ireland. Visitor to Ireland who go beyond the shops and
pubs will soon be amazed by how the country revels in this
age.
It
is less obvious to most visitors is how new Ireland is as
an independent nation. The Republic of Ireland, is barely
50 years old. Roughly fifty persent of the Irish population
is under 25, and nearly 25% is under 15.
Ireland's past has been an inspirational saga of tradition
of courage, humor, and creativity. Change is not new to the
island, yet the scale and rate of the changes happening in
Ireland today are without precedent. That' is exactly where
the contradictions turn so endearing --like the aged farmer
in a tweed cap who would panic at using a computer but would
rings his bookmaker on his cellphone.
The mysic of modern day Ireland lies in these very daily
slices of life. You should take the time to let it absorb.
