IRELAND - THE INTERNATIONAL GOLF DESTINATION
OF THE YEAR 2004
Ireland attracts over 240,000 golfers from worldwide each
year - No wonder it has been voted as the International
Golf Destination of the Year for 2004 by members of the
International Association of Golf Tour Operators or the IAGTO.
The Association has 145 members in 28 countries and these
voted Ireland the highest rating for the follwing:
- #1 in Customer satisfaction
- The Quality of golf courses and the accommodation available
- True value for money
- Professional conduct of suppliers in the region
- Support the local tourism industry provides
- Flexibility in accessibility to tee times
World
renowned and European ranked golfer Pad Harrington says: "I
am not at all surprised at this latest recognition for Ireland's
golf. I have been playing all over the World and in my experience,
Ireland's complete golf package in terms of quality and choice
of courses, coupled with the distinctive Irish welcome, is
something very special".
It shouldn't be a great surprise for Ireland's nomination
as International Golf Destination of the Year for 2004.
It is a reflection of the the immense investment that Ireland
has put in the development and marketing of the country's
's golfing product for the past decade or so. This further,
features Ireland in being nominated to host the Ryder Cup
in 2006 at The K Club.
Today, Ireland attracts close to 240,000 golfing visitors
yearly, generating close to €200 million for the country's
exchequer. The breakdown of visitors into Ireland shows approximately
150,000 from the United Kingdom; 45,000 from the USA; 40,000
from Continental Europe and 6 per cent or 15,000 from the
Rest of the World.
A further cap in Ireland's high profile in golf is this year
, Fáilte Ireland has sponsoring four major International
tournaments:
- the AIB Irish Seniors Open at Adare Manor Hotel and Golf
Resort
- The Smurfit European Open at the K Club in July
- The Nissan Irish Open, Baltray, Co Louth in July
- The WGC-American Express Championships, Mount Juliet Conrad
in September.
Ireland has of course, over 400 golf courses including
a third of the world's links courses.
